OSXFAQ Mac OS X Tip-of-the-Day
Trouble-Shooting II (System) - Launching and file Association
By Adrian Mayo - Editor - OSXFAQ
This week's tips give some hints for trouble-shooting system problems
that affect many applications, or the system in general.
Week 28 February, Trouble Shooting (Applications) considers
trouble-shooting a particular application that is not behaving as it
should.
Week 14 March, Trouble-Shooting III (Hardware) considers hardware
problems like disc corruption and faulty memory.
Week 21 March, Trouble Shooting IV (Advanced) gives some advanced
trouble-shooting tips, mostly involving the terminal and single-user
mode.
When the Finder won't open documents or launch applications, or shows
incorrect icons, it is likely that either the Finder is a little
confused and has its caches in a twist, or else the Launch Services
database is corrupt. Both these situations are easily remedied.
First, try re-launching the Finder. Either Control-Option-click (or
Option-Click-and-Hold) the Finder icon in the Dock, and select
'Relaunch':
or hit Command-Option-Escape, select the Finder, and hit Relaunch:
(Note that the Option key is marked as 'alt' in some locales.)
If the problem persists, it is likely a corrupt Launch Services
database and not a confused Finder. In this case delete the following
files from the Library:Preferences folder within your home folder:
LSApplications
LSClaimedTypes
LSScheme
and re-launch the Finder.
Next Step, delete the file preference file:
com.apple.LaunchServices.plist
and re-launch the Finder.
Note: these instructions are version-specific, but are good for all
versions of Panther. I think Jaguar was different.
If you have ever tried to kill the Finder or Dock using the Terminal,
you will have noticed that they automatically re-launch. How? The
parent process of your login session is
/System/Library/CoreServices/loginwindow.app/Contents/MacOS/
loginwindow, and this monitors the Finder and Dock and re-launches them
if they vanish.
Enjoy !! :-)
