Trouble-Shooting II (System) - Keep it Tidy
By Adrian Mayo - Editor - OSXFAQ
Caches. They speed things up, but when a cache gets corrupted it can
cause weird behaviour. If an application or a system component is
being weird, look for a possibly related cache and delete it.
First quit the application, or all applications for a system problem.
Look in Library:Caches in your home folder for a file or folder that
looks like it belongs to the errant application or system component.
It is safe to delete a cache, the application will simply re-create it,
fresh and clean.
Re-start the application, or log out and back in if the problem is
(was?) more system-level.
You can even trash (or move) the entire contents of the Caches folder.
If a particular problem affects all user accounts, consider the system
cache in Library:Caches at the root of the system disc. Again, log out
then in again, or restart.
Another area worthy of investigation is Library:Application Support.
Sometimes you can delete an applications little deposits, but beware
that others like iCal store data there. Try moving a folder onto the
desktop. Then if the problem is not solved simply replace the folder
(overwriting any newly-created).
A well-trodden hint. If your Mac in not on 24/7 consider installing a
utility to run the periodic house-cleaning operations. Big system log
files do not normally cause problems, but it's worth keeping them in
trim.
Mac Janitor is one such utility, and there are others.
