OSXFAQ Mac OS X Tip-of-the-Day
Trouble-Shooting II (System) - Clean Start
By Adrian Mayo - Editor - OSXFAQ
Many odd problems can be solved by a simple logout/login cycle, or
perhaps a restart. Additionally, for the more persistent anomalies
wear a turtle-neck and face Cupertino.
Remove startup items if the problem persists. Check what you have
installed (recently) and remove any that might offend, then logout out
and in again.
Alternatively, simply hold down the shift key when you log in and no
startup items will be launched (safe start).
Remember all of the 'hacks' you install. These are little background
applications that alter the appearance or basic functionality of the
system. They can cause odd problems and interact badly with the
occasional application. This is especially true after a Software
Update. Remove them and do the restart dance.
BTW, Unsanity do lots of nice little 'haxies'; check them out at:

Finally, Apples iApps can misbehave if you have removed certain basic
fonts. Review anything you may have done recently in Font Book,
especially removing or disabling a system font.
Enjoy !! :-)
