Kimeldorf's First Aid

A Troubleshooting Guide For Os X Running On An Imac 800 (Flat Panel)

Part 4 of a 6 Part Series

By Martin Kimeldorf - Kimeldorf@attbi.com

With contributions from Andy Muir, Pat Gallagher

Introduction

These notes were compiled after one month of working with my Imac, navigating OS X and troubleshooting the complexities of MS office, Adobe Distiller and other third party software. I ended up having to restore my hard drive twice. I researched first aid methods consulting books, articles, with input from authors and experts online.

These are personal notes and should be taken as suggestions only, rather than as expert advice. I am not a computer expert, just an author and teacher. Use my first aid notes at your own risk, nothing is guaranteed. In fact, I have found out that well-intentioned advice about a cure can sometimes be worse than the original disease. Back up all critical files before trying anything in this document!!

SPECIFIC OS X PROBLEMS

FOLDERS RECOVERED IN OS 9

Symptom: Boot into 9.2.2 system and find in trash: Rescued folder->501 folder->Temporary folder used to running Disk First Aid. Answer: May not be a problem. Trying turning on most of your extensions, run Disk First Aid from CD and rebuild desktop

CAN'T UNLOCK A FILE

  • 1) Try placing file in a folder and then in the trash
  • 2) Boot in OS 9 and trash it, make sure it is not critical
  • 3) Rundisk first aid

DOC ICONS ARE PROBLEM

Dock items disappear or quit

--Must go to Process Viewer Select docFile select Quit Process

DISK FIRST AID QUITS IN OS 9

Symptom: Most times Disk First Aid reports that it has repaired the disk in one pass. Other times it takes 2 or 3 passes. When it takes longer, I then have problems quitting Disk First Aid. It appears to quit, the message box disappears, but it never lets me return to the finder. Then I have to do the big re-start by pushing in the button. Disk First runs again during restart and everything appears okay...only to be repeated about a week earlier.

Answer: Boot from OS 9 CD and run Diks First Aide, followed by booting OS X CD Disk First aid

DOWNLOADS SHOW UP AS TEXT FILES INSTEAD OF DMG

  • Drag files icon to Disk Copy icon or mount from Disk Copy
  • OS 9 VERSION OPENS INSTEAD OF OS X

DIRECTORY DAMAGE IN OS 9 REPORTED WITH DISK FIRST AID

Disk First Aid brings back warnings any or all of these warnings when run from within OS 9.2.2 as start up:

  • Master Directory Block needs minor repair 1,0
  • Mount check found minor error
  • Volume header needs minor repair.
