OSXFAQ Reader Tips
Contents Can't Find Its Way Home - Jag-O-Package
OSXFAQ Reader Tip By John Klinger
Your recent "Best of Dr. Mac's Tip-of-the-Day #20" reminded me of a
problem I had recently. That was about the extent of the relationship
between my problem and yours, but I thought I'd pass it along.
Sometimes when I started a program in the Applications directory, the
program name in the Menu would be for a great game I have called
JewelToy. Before I continue, I need to say that the problem ended up
being caused by me, not JewelToy. If you want a highly addictive game,
check out http://www.aegidian.org/jeweltoy/.
Back to the problem. When this problem occurred, the menu items were
for the correct app, but the application name would be JewelToy.
Finally, having put up with this peculiarity for long enough, I started
digging around and found the problem.
It turns out that, for whatever reason, I had JewelToy's "Contents"
folder in my application directory [The Contents folder is usually
hidden within an application's package contents]. For some reason
unknown to me, when certain applications were started, they were
associated with this Contents directory and would therefore be
identified JewelToy. I deleted the stray Contents folder, and guess
what... the problem still persisted. Once I rebooted, however, the
problem vanished and all my applications behaved as they should.
Thanks for the great tips; I hope they continue for a long time.
